Bragging!!

Pine, oak, mahoganny, teak, walnut - it doesn't matter what kind it is - I love wood!! Whenever there is a woodworking program on TV and I happen to find it, the family will be watching. The things people can make with wood amaze me!!

So when our oldest son, Luke decided to take "Intro to Woods" as an elective course in Grade 9, I was thrilled. We had no idea that they could pick a project to make and take home, what a bonus!! Luke had to design and build a minature of his project before starting the "life size" version. He built this wonderful stand that year, out of oak. It holds my toaster and cordless phone.

In Grade 10 we had to "force" or should I say "strongly suggest" that Luke make us a blanket chest out of oak. It took 1.5 semesters - he broke his arm 1/2 way through the first semester (for the 2nd time) and couldn't finish it. But that's another long story for a different post. Again, he did a wonderful job even if it wasn't his favorite project. It's in our bedroom. Might make a shallow pillow for on top yet.

The last part of the semester in Grade 11, Luke made himself a smaller chest, out of oak again. The rounded lid was a lot of work, but again he did an awesome job.

There was no wood course for Luke to take in Grade 12, but he had fun tutoring in a Grade 9 "Intro to Woods" class each semester. I'm sure Luke will be totally embarrased that his mother has posted (boasted) about him - but isn't that a mother's prerogative?

  4. I love seeing children's work. What great woodworking talent your son has. I try and encourage my son in anything that he wants to try. I feel somewhat thankful that he is into arts and crafts instead of sports. We can do more stuff together!

  9. Those are wonderful. I love wood, too. And yes it is a mother's perogative to boast on their children's accomplishments. Too many today don't and the children never know for sure if their parent's care. He does great work and you have reason to be proud.

...apparently i do good work... ok then... noted...
Thanks to everyone on your compliments, they're much appreciated. I must, however, give a great amount of credit to my high school cabinetry teacher. The man is a great woodworker and cabinetmaker, and i could not have done anything like this without his knowledge and hard work.
@ Randomosity: If you don't do any woodworking, GO TAKE A COURSE.
Again, thankyou to everyone, and have a good day.

  17. Wonderful blog! Luke is lucky to have a mom who is so proud of him. And he should be proud of himself as well. Many years from now he will have an heirloom, and he will be able to say "I made that!"

  18. Wow, really, really great job! Even if Luke doesn't end up going into wood work as a trade, he will always have these wonderful life skills, and that is a gift. Lets hope our public schools don't do away with these wonderful classes given our horrible economy and the fact that schools always seem to be first on the cutting block.

  22. What a fun way to learn a great skill!
My Dad learned how to build things when he was a teenager and he says that when he retires he will use his skills for a small business!
    And to keep his sanity:)
