the Clever Crafter!

Aren't buttons fun? :) While looking for recycling shops I found Clever Crafter who makes wonderful button bracelets and earrings from guitar picks! I'm from Lansing, Michigan and I've been crafting since I was 5 or 6 years old. I have a cat, Lily, that loves to "help" me while I work on projects and a wonderful and supportive boyfriend.

Once I started experimenting with different projects I always got the same reaction from people: "How clever!" Naturally, I decided this would make for a good shop name... Clever Crafter. I've had my Etsy shop for a couple of years with occasional sales, but I've just recently made it official with my DBA and State Sales Tax License. For the last couple of weeks I've noticed an increase in sales, and it's been great!

To be honest, my first thought was not in recycling for my projects, but rather in using things out of the ordinary to make unique jewelry. I think the first project was a bracelet made from puzzle pieces. I bought a puzzle from Goodwill and when I was almost done with it I realized that there were pieces missing. I decided that I had to find a way to use the puzzle instead of throwing it away. From there I've always looked for a different way to use items.

At the moment my addiction is buttons. I can't stop looking for new buttons in different colors and textures! I've also been looking at jump rings in different colors as I think about trying my hand at chain mail jewelry!

I like making the guitar pick earrings because they're all so different. Finding stamps small enough for the picks is a challenge in itself sometimes, but I like matching the stamps to the pick sizes and colors. Sometimes it seems that the colors just speak to me!

Recycling Cans into Art!

KM Studio has the most wonderful items made from recycled cans! I don't know how Kristin does it, but her items are definitely unique, amazing and one of a kind. Just take a look.

*Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm from a small town in Pennsylvania (Which is also in the US). I'm 20 years old and married to my wonderful husband who is 21. We have two babies (kitties, that is).

*How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
Very simple.. KM is my initials, and Studio because I didn't want to brand myself to one thing. I am very varied as far as arts go, so I figured if I stuck with Studio, I can pretty much do anything! I've always wanted to share and sell my art, and when I came across Etsy, it just seemed like the perfect place! :)

*How/what made you decide to use recycled cans?
Being green is important to me. I think it is awesome you can take something old - like a used soda can - and make it into something useful and fun!

*Do you have a blog?

*What would you love to add to your crafting space?
I would love to even HAVE a crafting space. Our house is still in the remodelling stage, so my art room isn't even done yet. It is really difficult to work with no set space. :( It'll be really nice when it is finished though!

*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
Any of the paintings. I LOVE painting. The recycling items are fun too,.. but more repetitive, I think. With acrylics, I can change it up a little bit. :)

McKenney's Keepsakes

I love pendants! They are a great accent to a wardrobe, easy to change and there are so many to choose from :) While looking for shops that would be willing to have their Etsy Mini's on the sidebar, I came across McKenney's Keepsakes. Pendants with inspirational words on them are my favorite, and this shop has some of the best I have seen!


My name is Jonessa, but my friends call me Jes. Currently living in a small town in Northern CT, I just moved from big giant city of Fort Lauderdale about 2 years ago. I am married to a wonderful man, and between the 2 of us we have 4 wonderful children, 3boys, 1 girl.

My shop name McKenneys Keepsakes, was formed because I wanted the products that people buy from me to be something that want to keep forever. I look at some of the things I have, no matter how silly they are, and I love them because of the person that gave them to me or a story it reminds me of. I want my customers to feel that when they look at my pendants. The McKenney part is just my last name. I started my buisness for the same reason I think alot of people do these days. I wanted to make a little extra money doing something that I love.

I have small room in our basement that used to be an office for my husband. He no longer uses it so with his help, we cleaned it out and it became my craft space. It's not very big, but I don't need a lot of space. I have a big desk that I work on and a small radio to listen to. There is a white board on the wall that my hubby and I write our idea's on, but there is not character to it yet. I really wanted to paint it, but have not decided on a color. As time goes on, my plan is to really make it my own. Right now it is also partially storage. I want to add some posters and pictures. Again, over time I will make it my own.

I started crafting when I was little. My mom taught me how to cross stitch and eventually I moved on to counted cross stitch. As time went on, I would make what ever came to mind. The thing I love about crafting is that it is my stress reliever. Time flies by when I'm doing it. I don't think about anything, I just completely relax.

My current supply addiction is digital collage I find here on Etsy. I have just recently started to work on making my own, but the ones I find are just so great. Not to mention I really do enjoy helpping others here on Etsy. I just bought 3 new ones yesterday and inquired about another this morning.

My favorite item in my shop currently is my "Someone with Autism Loves Me" pendant. I originally made one of these for my husband as a key chain because his daughter is autistic. I decided to put one in my shop because I thought others in our situation would like them. I have several more designs, I just haven't put them up yet.

Grand Rapids, MI. I have lived here all my life, except for a year, where I traveled to different cities for my job.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am 34 years old. Married to a wonderful woman and we have 2 sons. They are my joy and inspiration for everything I do.

*How did you decide on your shop name?
My Brother-in-Law was our money man. His middle name is Forrest and since it fit with our "green/recycling" theme, it was an easy choice.

Why did you start your business?
For a simple need to provide for my family. I lost my job due to downsizing and needed to do something. It was an easy choice, to be home with my family and still be able to provide for them. What could be better?

*What got you started in recycling?
A few summers ago, we were at a garage sale and this guy had 3 huge boxes of old books with a free sign on them. Really couldn't pass them up. We had gotten a vintage bookshelf and wanted to fill it up. But we knew that we couldn't keep them all, but were sure what do to with them. One day my wife had bought a journal and it came to me that I could do that with the books that weren't in good shape.

*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
Books, now I can't pass a yard sale or resale shop without going in to find a new one for a journal. The older the better!

*What motivates or inspires you to create?
Knowing that I am helping the universe in my small way.

*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
The journals, it is fun to be able to flip through those books picking out which chapters are going to be kept.

*Do you have a blog?

Happy New Year Glitter Pictures

I can't believe how much my Blog has changed since I started it. Can you believe it's been over a year? I can't. Time has really flown by, and blogging has been so much fun!! :) There are so many wonderful people I "met" in 2009 through blogging, I hope to meet many more in 2010!

Last year I had decided to feature as many shops as possible on the blog. It was amazing how many shops were looking for some free advertising. This year (after Jan.) I'm going to focus on new shops or shops with under 5 sales. If you have a shop that falls into this category (or know of one) and would like a feature - leave a comment on this post or convo me through my Etsy Shop. Maybe I'll have to do the features on Fridays. I'll call it "Feature Friday" - that would work! If there are enough shops I'll do 2 features/wk. What other day would work? Maybe Tuesday - but what would I call it? Tuesday Toots? Maybe not :)

There are times when I have some small things to post, you know what I mean - it just doesn't fit in any where, and isn't enough to do a whole post. So I'm going to start "Mish Mash Monday". There will be a MckLinky at the end of each post for anyone who would like to join me! It would be great if by the end of 2010 there where a bunch of blogs that were doing their version of "MMM".

Handmade Knits!!

It's winter in Manitoba! Well - I guess it's winter all over the northern hemisphere. While searching Etsy for scarves for our cold climate, I found this wonderful shop that just had to be featured :) Nevita has beautiful hand knit items!! Take a look . . .


Where are you from?
I live in Bulgaria, it's a small country in south-eastern Europe where only a small number of people know that there is such amazing place like Etsy.com. In my BLOG I have a post about Bulgaria- short videos, showing her beauty, nature, and adorable music.

What made you decide to sell on Etsy?
I always wanted to open a store and sell my hand knitted scarves and baby clothing. However, my full-time job, and pregnancy didn't bring enough confidence in this picture.
When my beautiful baby daughter came to the world, she brought new hope and faith in myself. I found knitting section and crochet section and I was happily surprised that someone is selling so many handmade creations. At that time the idea that Etsy.com is an easy way to create and maintain shop came into play. With etsy, I figured, I wouldn't have to care about renting and maintaining a physical shop, and at the same time I'd have flexible working hours. Now I stay at home as mother, enjoy spending time with my baby daughter, my knitting, and promoting my shop via interesting online tools. My online store is Boutique-a-holic.

How did you originally get into Hand knit and Goblin making business?
I learned to knit and make goblin tapestry, when I was a child. I went to my grandparent's home, during school offs. My grandmother thought me different handmade techniques, such as knit, crochet, sewing and others. During the years, I was paying more attention to knitting and goblin tapestry, and found I enjoyed it a lot. It became my hobby, and after my daughter's birth I decided I was determined to share the products of my passion with people around the world.

What motivates and inspires you to create?
Winter scarves (http://www.etsy.com/shop/nevita?section_id=6555819)... When I was young girl, my mother kept telling me to wear scarves so I wouldn't get cold. I hated scarves! That is, until the day I knitted myself a very colorful, soft, and pleasant to touch and look at piece of happiness (yes, a scarf!). My classmates loved it. That motivated me to make more scarves, because I found scarves could be joy, emotions, and good looking fun - yes staying warm became not so bad experience after all :)

Inspiration sources have been changing during my path in life. At some point in time, I enjoyed to come back home, and to get calm and be all by myself while making my needlepoint tapestries (http://www.etsy.com/shop/nevita?section_id=6593034).
At other times, inspiration was there, but I couldn't tell where it came from, so I'd like to think of it as coming from deep within the human soul.
Now I am motivated from the smile of my baby daughter and the look of her eyes. In addition, when I look and reflect on the results of my hand made creations I've made during the years, I get a good feeling of accomplishment, and I want to do more. I'm proud of my winter scarves, my gobelins, and last but not least my baby clothing.

What do you like most about being a seller?
Being a seller is something new for me. I like to learn new things, find information too. I learn how to sell by reading a lot of articles from experienced Etsy sellers. It is not easy work, I love to create, but honestly, I don't know how to sell my creations. It is something I want to learn to do. Being a seller is a new opportunity to bring joy to people.

What are your interests outside Etsy?
I like the Human Resourses area and I am finishing my masters degree in Human Resources management. I enjoy interacting with people.
I love to travel and regularly organize small trips through my country.

My name is Cathy Dingman and I live in Fort Madison, Iowa. I am 49 years young and have been crafting, decorating, painting, and drawing ever since I was a little girl. I guess you can say it's in my bones.

For a number of years I owned a home interiors/gift shop by the name of Sweet Magnolia. For medical reasons I had to close the business. So as so many things in life, I was handed lemons, so I choose to make lemonade. While running my business, the amount of time I had to creating had become limited, so now I get to dedicated most of my time to doing what I love most, CREATING.

I dabble in many types of crafts. However floral arrangements and wreaths are my favorite. I also spend a good amount of time doing oil and watercolor painting, along with pastel and charcoal drawing.

Decorating is another passion of mine. I use to do this as part of my business but now I have limited it to working for family and friends.

I have a studio in my home. I converted a spare bedroom into an arts and crafts space. I don't let many people into it because it is too cramped and usually a MESS. Every now and then I will take the time to straighten and clean. I would love to invest in more storage units for the studio so that it would be easier to keep things organized. I also would love to have another studio room so that I can have one room for my crafts and one room for my art.

The item in my shop I enjoyed making the most is the hand painted wood Christmas sled, mostly because It required so many of my creative juices to make. I had to make the sled from wood, stain it, paint it, and add a floral piece.

Angels

Christmas makes me think of Angels. If I could decorate my whole house with them, I'd be a happy woman :) I found some really great Angels on Etsy, and decided to do a Wish List featuring a few that are my favorites.

JAM JAMS:
2 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
6 tbsps. syrup
2 cup shortening
2 tsps. soda
1 tsp lemon or vanilla
Flour to roll thin

Mix all ingredients. Add enough flour to roll thin. Then cut and bake at 350F for 12 - 15 minutes. While warm, put together with favorite jam.

I am from Jamestown, NY Which is the home town of Lucille Ball. I now live about 10 miles outside of it in a dinky little town.

*Tell us a bit about yourself.
I have always been artistic. My parents would always get me art supplies for Christmas. (Im hinting for a new easel this year lol) I finally graduated in 2007 at the age of 44 from The State University of New York College at Fredonia (SUNY Fredonia). I received my Bachelors of Fine Art Graphic Design. I have 3 children, and 2 grandsons. (yes I know Im too young and gorgeous to be a grandma!)

Profession:
I am a graphic designer by trade. I love design and typography. Letter form can be very interesting. Some of my favorite designers are George Lois, David Carson, Emery Vincent Design, and some of my favorite painters are Monet, Edward Hopper and Artemisia Gentileschi.

*How did you decide on your shop name?
Layne is my middle name. It sounded a little more trendy than Stefanie.

Why did you start your business?
I got laid off and have been doing craft shows for around 15 years. I thought this would be a good way to keep myself busy and maybe make a few extra bucks. Being on Etsy helps keep me from stock piling the things I make.

*When did you start crafting?
Ive been crafting in some form or another as long as I can remember.

Tell us a bit about your shop and what you carry?
I have an eclectic shop. A bit of everything. I love to oil paint so decided to sell some paintings there. I have been sewing since I was 10 years old. From there about 15 years ago I started making dolls, and it sorta just took off from there branching out into centerpieces, and decorative painting. Ok I admit, I have a list a mile long of oh gee I want to make one of those.

*Where do you craft?
Right now at my kitchen table. I do have a studio, but the floor had to get pulled up to fix septic pipes. YAY

*What would you love to add to your crafting space?
If the studio floor was back down I would add more space (its about 14x14 now) and more storage. Also I could use a butler, someone has to clean up after me!

*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
Oil paint. I just love working with it, the texture, the smell all of it. I would paint 24/7 if I could. I am also hooked on books. I have 100s of them mostly design and art related. Fabric would have to be my next vice. If I stop sewing, Joanns will go under! Im also a sucker for a good paintbrush. I think I have 300 paintbrushes between oil painting and decorative painting. Wait make that 299 I finally threw one out the other day.

*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
The painting. Its what I love to do the most. The sleds were fun to make, but those are done in acrylic and is so different to use. I would like to learn to make quilts. Darn another thing on my list of I'm going to make that some day!

Rainbow Metals

Dvora has an amazing metal shop on Etsy. Rainbow Metals has the most wonderful magnets, jewelry, items for children and more. This is a very unique shop!


My name is Dvora Schleffer. I live in a small village in the north of Israel. I have been crafting ever since I can remember myself. I started making jewelry when I was a teenager and never stopped. My "RainbowMetal" store in a new adventure for me that I just started about 2 months ago. I have been making sterling silver and gemstones jewelry for many years under the name "DvoraSchleffer". I wanted to try something different, with more colorful and fun items. I also ventured into non-jewelry items for the first time with small home decor items like magnets, pictures etc. Since my name "DvoraSchleffer" was already taken by my existing store, I came up with "RainbowMetal" which I think reflects the essence of the store - colorful metal.

I have a small studio at home where I do my crafting. I have several working areas in the studio for all my different crafting needs. My work process is made of several stages. First I plan my designs. I make several sketches until I decide on thoise I like. Then I decide on the techniques I am going to use. I actually have several different techniques that I use to make my rainbowmetal items. After that I make the design and see if it works as planned or if it need any changes on the way. I am not addicted to any supplies, I love experimenting and trying new things all the time. I am however addicted to tools! I have a wide selection and I have a list of many more tools I would love to get. So in answer to what would I add to my crafting space I would say - many cool tools and more space so I'll have room to put it all!

My favorite piece is the cute giraffe painting. I had fun venturing into non-jewelry items for the first time. I got to decorate rooms and not just people; I got to work in different sizes and different techniques than those I am used to. The paintings for children's room were especially fun to do, and this giraffe painting is my favorite. It turned out so much nicer and cuter than I had expected.

Do you love sweet treats? Have I found the perfect shop for you!! Grandma Althea's Kitchen has the most amazing snacks I've seen! I get the munchies every time I go to her shop :)


*Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am originally from a tiny town near Pittsburgh, PA. I am going to be visiting family all over PA, FL, and NC until sometime in January, but plan to continue my shop. Most of my family are good cooks. Making holiday cookies and chocolates together is actually a family tradition we do every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

*How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
I'm a Grandma, and my name is Althea. I just recently started it after hearing about Etsy. I think its great that there is a place for handmade items!

*When did you start candy and treats?
I've made them as long as I can remember!

*Is there one treat YOU can't resist?
Blackberry pie made by my Grandmother, before she passed away. She was actually an awful cook, blackberry pie was the only thing she really made well!

*What would you love to add to your creating space?
I'm not really sure what you mean by creating space, if you mean my Etsy, I'd love to add pies, but I'm afraid that the post office would not pay attention to "This way up" labels. I may send a few test ones and find out.

*What’s your supply addiction; is there a specific color or type of supply you just can’t pass up?
As in ingredients? Hmmm, generally it's more like a recipie that looks great that I just have to try! I really like allrecipies.com as it has a rating system, as well as Taste Of Home magazine.

*Which item in your shop did you enjoy making the most and why?
The Tom Turkeys are about to be retired as it's passing Thanksgiving, so my new favorite are the brownie trees! Although the fortune cookie cards are pretty fun, too!

Another Wish List

Well - there are only 24 more shopping days till Christmas!! Are you ready? We got the last of the presents in the mail today (thank goodness for online shopping!)
But of course there were a few things that I wanted and had to look for on Etsy. Seems that I link melting tart thingies. And so I went looking for the best price and with the best shipping to Canada. I found this amazing shop!! Of course I ordered some right away :) Want the house smelling nice for the holidays. I ordered the tarts in Harvest Mix, Vanilla Cream and Pumpkin Spice. Oh I'm sorry - I didn't tell you where to get them? LOL I purchased them from the first shop in my wish list! Prim Country Farms is a wonderful shop on Etsy. Chris lives in Amarillo Texas and has had her shop on Etsy since May! She has a wonderful collections of Prim items to decorate your home. Please take a look at her shop after you have read all about her!


How did you decide on your shop name? Why did you start your business?
I love anything primitve, country and vintage. And I work with all kinds of mediums. So one night hubby and I was trying to think of a good name for me. So I decided to try and combine all three in my name. Prim stands for my primtive items, country is my country items and farms includes everything else I make. That is how Prim Country Farms came to be.

One day I saw this beautiful Primitve Raggedy Ann doll on a site. And I fell in love with her. I kept going back to this wonderful creation someone had made. And I thought to myself I want to learn all I can about making Prim dolls. So I set out and taught myself everything I could. How to design a Primitive Raggedy Ann doll. And I have been making them every since.


When did you start crafting?
I have been sewing since I was a child I use to make my doll clothes. I guess I have been sewing for a better part of 30 years now. I have been crafting for the public since 2001. I started out making quilts for the public and then in 2007 I started making Prim dolls and began selling them on line at that point. It has been a wonderful journey the last three years for me.

Where do you craft?
I have a sewing room but I have so many supplies and crafts in there. I had to move into my kitchen slash dining room. I would love to have a studio someday.

What's your supply addiction?
I love fabric and anything old. OH My Goodness I am so addicted to fabric it is sad to say but the ladies at the fabric store know me by my first name.LOL
